Book Review - "Atomic Habits"- How Small Changes Can Make a Huge Difference

One of the things that I’m a big proponent of when I’m teaching people about yoga and meditation is that a little bit goes a long way towards making a habit. I know how busy people are and even they feel that slowing down and practicing mindfulness would benefit them, they have a tough time finding the time and space to do so.


That’s why I’m an advocate of short movement practices to loosen up the body and 1-5 minute meditation or breathing sessions. Sitting for meditation for an hour or even thirty minutes can seem impossible to me and I often have tons of mental resistance around the thought of doing so. But meditating for one minute and forty seconds while I heat up water for tea in the microwave sounds like something I can definitely do. And putting a time and place on it makes it more likely to happen.


These small steps create habits that get internalized and built upon a little at a time. That’s why I love the book that I’m currently listening to on Audible called, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. This book is totally down to earth and actionable. And if you’re looking for small ways to start positive habits and let them really connect deeply into your life, this is the book for you. You can also use the system to release negative, or not so helpful, habits.


The other huge thing that I love about this book is what Clear says about how we view progress. I know how easy it is to give up on things that we set our minds to because we don’t see results right away, but he makes an important case for how we see our progress and how each positive step that we take - no matter how small - is truly a building block for becoming the person that we want to be.


I first heard of Clear and his book on Amy Porterfield’s podcast, “Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield”. If you’re an entrepreneur Amy’s podcast is definitely worth checking out, but even if you’re not she has tons of amazing guests on her show with business tips, lifestyle tips, and just general motivational energy from people who take charge in their lives and truly create things that they’re passionate about.
